Ekurhuleni Water Care Company
Serving communities and industry through sustainable, resilient water care
ERWAT (Ekurhuleni Water Care Company) is a South African water utility with deep technical expertise in wastewater treatment and bulk sanitation services. Established in 1992 as a Section 21 company, ERWAT is jointly owned by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, and the Lesedi Local Municipality.
Through an extensive and strategically distributed infrastructure, ERWAT delivers critical bulk wastewater treatment services to more than 8,000 industrial customers and over 4.2 million residents across its service area. On average, ERWAT treats between 700 and 1,000 megalitres (Mℓ) of wastewater per day, supporting both public health and economic activity.ERWAT operates and maintains 19 Water Care Works (WCWs), all of which are regulated in accordance with stringent quality standards set by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). As treated effluent is discharged into environmentally sensitive catchment areas, these facilities are managed using advanced scientific methodologies, continuous innovation, and proven treatment technologies.
A robust programme of routine sampling, laboratory analysis, and performance monitoring ensures consistent compliance and high-quality effluent discharge, reinforcing ERWAT’s commitment to environmental protection, regulatory excellence, and sustainable water resource management.
