ERWAT’s drainage districts form the backbone of its wastewater management system, providing a structured and efficient framework for the collection, conveyance and treatment of wastewater across the City of Ekurhuleni. Each drainage district is defined by natural catchment boundaries and engineered infrastructure, ensuring that wastewater is managed in a controlled, sustainable and environmentally responsible manner.

Through these drainage districts, ERWAT is able to plan, operate and maintain its Water Care Works, pump stations and conveyance networks with precision. This approach supports regulatory compliance, protects receiving water bodies, and enables proactive infrastructure planning to meet the growing demands of communities, industry and economic development—while upholding ERWAT’s mandate of Excellence in Water Care.
