ERWAT is committed to results-driven research and innovation that supports its strategic objectives while aligning with national and international priorities in the water and sanitation sector. Research initiatives are guided by operational relevance, regulatory requirements, and long-term sustainability outcomes.
Recognising the value of strong research partnerships, ERWAT collaborates with leading academic institutions, including the University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria, Stellenbosch University, and University of the Witwatersrand. ERWAT also works closely with key research and science bodies such as the National Institute for Communicable Diseases and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.

As a water care utility, ERWAT actively participates in local, national, and international forums and reference groups, providing technical input and sector expertise on water and sanitation initiatives. The organisation is an active member of professional institutes and contributes to the National Water Services Scientific Forum, coordinated by the South African Local Government Association.
