Promoting Environmental Stewardship and Cultural Heritage in Tembisa
In celebration of National Heritage and Arbor Month, ERWAT partnered with Mpumelelo Primary School in the Tembisa Informal Settlement to deliver a meaningful community engagement programme under the national theme: “Plant Your Tree – A Legacy of Green.”
The initiative, held in September, emphasised the dual importance of environmental sustainability and cultural preservation, bringing together learners, educators, and ERWAT representatives to inspire active citizenship and environmental awareness.
Engaging Young Minds Through Environmental Education
The programme focused on interactive and educational elements aimed at empowering primary school learners with knowledge and responsibility around water care, hygiene, and tree conservation.
Highlights of the day included:
- Insights into ERWAT’s core business and role in water and wastewater management
- Learners receiving educational material and sustainability-themed giveaways
- A “Wash-Your-Hands” hygiene demonstration for improved health practices
- A symbolic tree-planting ceremony led by school leadership and learners
The day culminated in the planting of commemorative trees, reinforcing the message of long-term environmental responsibility. This year’s featured Champion Trees – the Sophia Town Oak & Tree and the Sagole Baobab Tree – served as powerful symbols of natural and cultural heritage.
Driving CSI Through Education and Community Partnerships
Led by ERWAT’s passionate Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Specialist, Neo Tlhaku, the initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment to:
- Environmental stewardship
- Youth education and empowerment
- Grassroots community development
ERWAT continues to play a critical role in shaping sustainable communities by embedding environmental education into its CSI programmes. Events such as this not only promote greener public spaces but also nurture the next generation’s understanding of water care, hygiene, and sustainability.
