Strengthening Industry-Academia Collaboration for Excellence in Water Care

ERWAT recently hosted 100 second-year Chemical Engineering students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) at its Waterval Water Care Works facility. This visit forms part of ERWAT’s ongoing commitment to supporting academic institutions with industry-aligned experiential learning opportunities.

The initiative is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, reinforcing ERWAT’s role as a leader in sustainable wastewater management and engineering development in South Africa.

Real-World Exposure to Water Treatment Engineering

During the visit, students from UJ’s Department of Chemical Engineering Technology were introduced to operational aspects of wastewater treatment. Under the guidance of ERWAT’s professional engineers, students engaged with:

  • Key stages of the wastewater treatment process
  • Plant operations and system controls
  • Environmental and sustainability considerations
  • Day-to-day technical and safety protocols followed by ERWAT engineers

This direct exposure to live plant operations enhances the students’ theoretical understanding while offering insights into the professional environment they are preparing to enter.

Advancing the Future of Sustainable Engineering

This collaboration with UJ reflects a shared commitment to developing South Africa’s future engineering workforce. By aligning academic learning with practical experience, ERWAT helps students:

  • Strengthen their engineering competencies
  • Broaden their career outlook
  • Understand the role of wastewater treatment in sustainable development

ERWAT is proud to contribute to shaping a generation of professionals who will lead innovation and sustainability in the water sector.
