ERWAT recently had the privilege of hosting a visiting Tanzanian government delegation at one of its Water Care Works, the largest facility in ERWAT’s portfolio, with a design capacity of 170 million litres per day.

The technical engagement provided delegates with a comprehensive, first-hand overview of large-scale wastewater treatment operations. The programme covered key treatment processes, including screening, grit removal, biological treatment, nutrient removal, secondary clarification, and final disinfection.

In addition to treatment processes, discussions focused on critical operational and strategic areas such as industrial effluent solutions, energy neutrality, water reclamation, sludge management and beneficiation, operations, and maintenance.

The technical programme was led by Mr Lavhuwani Mathomu (District Manager: DD6). Contributions were made by Dr Ezekiel Lengaram (Researcher in Economics, Wits University), who outlined the purpose of the visit on behalf of the Tanzanian delegation, while Stefanus Weyers (Waterfall Plant Manager) opened proceedings with a safety share and welcome. Manelisi Mqogi (Waterfall Plant Manager) provided an operational overview, supported by Siviwe Bunge (Maintenance Manager) and Mogau Mkhabela (Senior Process Controller), who shared valuable technical insights.

Plant tours were led by Mogau Mkhabela, Manelisi Mqogi, and Mr Lavhuwani Mathomu, allowing delegates to observe the practical application of wastewater management technologies, energy recovery systems, and sludge handling processes.

The engagement enabled delegates to gain insight into how ERWAT ensures regulatory compliance while maintaining high environmental protection standards. The visit served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, supporting Tanzania’s efforts to strengthen wastewater infrastructure planning, enhance operational efficiency, and advance environmental sustainability.
