This proof-of-concept study evaluated the feasibility of applying wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) to monitor SARS-CoV-2 prevalence in South African communities.

Wastewater samples were collected from 10 wastewater treatment works (WWTWs) across five provinces over four weeks. Both composite and grab samples were analysed using validated virus recovery, extraction, and RT-PCR detection methods.
