SUMMARY:Micro and Small Hydropower Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The transition toward sustainable and resilient energy systems is critical in Africa\, where electricity shortages\, aging infrastructure\, and rising operational costs continue to challenge essential services. Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTWs)\, as well as adjacent sectors such as agriculture and mining\, are energy-intensive operations\, yet they offer largely untapped renewable energy potential. \nMicro hydropower systems present a practical and innovative solution to reduce energy costs\, lower carbon emissions\, enhance operational sustainability\, and support national climate and energy goals. \nThis webinar will introduce a project demonstrating the operational integration of micro hydropower systems at WWTWs. Attendees will gain insights into innovation\, capacity building\, and replicable frameworks that can support broader adoption across South Africa’s 850 WWTWs\, agricultural sites\, and potential mining operations. \nThe project builds on previous work by the University of Pretoria and the Water Research Commission\, including the South African Hydropower Atlas\, conduit hydropower developments\, and pilot projects implemented locally and internationally. The initiative addresses key barriers to adoption by providing demonstrated case studies\, practical procurement frameworks\, and stakeholder engagement strategies. \nWhy Attend? \n\nLearn about innovative energy solutions for critical infrastructure.\nUnderstand the financial\, operational\, and environmental benefits.\nExplore pathways for scaling sustainable energy solutions across South Africa’s water sector.\nEngage directly with project leaders\, local and international innovators\, and utility stakeholders.\n\nWe look forward to your participation in this important conversation on advancing South Africa’s just energy transition.
